25 Keys to Winning Union Elections
1. Set benchmarks before filing
Employers pad the employee list. The only thing that can overcome cheating is mass support and using benchmarks before filing.
2. File unfairs early and often
Set the tone of the campaign. If union busters get away with a small violation it gives them confidence to try something bigger.
3. Lead from day one
If you lead, the union busters are too busy responding to run their game plan.
4. Stick to your key issues
20 priorities means no priorities.
5. Double confirm your supporters are able to attend the voting times
6. Prepare your campaign material before you file
Have a game plan to win the union election BEFORE you file.
7. Distribute a bargaining survey immediately after filing
Bargaining surveys set the tone that you’ve already won, the vote is just a formality. The boss will waste his time attacking the bargaining survey rather than the union.
8. Release the results of the bargaining survey the day before the vote
Workers don’t join unions for the sake of trade unionism, they join for the bread and butter issues at their workplace. Bargaining surveys results give powerful social proof to issues that are widely felt in the workplace.
9. Email workers every couple of days to keep the line of communication open
You ARE collecting email addresses on your union cards, right?
10. Stress “You are the Union”
Be direct with your inside committee. Ask them how they plan on winning the vote.
11. Never stop signing cards
Card signers are more likely to be union voters.
12. Prepare a “Why We are Voting Yes” leaflet with photos and what a union contract means to members of your inside committee.
13. Inoculate Inoculate Inoculate.
There is no such thing as over-inoculation.
14. Prepare supporters for “A Last Big Lie”
You wont have time to respond to the employer’s last minute leaflet. The best way to counter this union-busters tactic is to tell workers to expect it.
15. Set up a rapid responder system through email and text
16. Never respond to the union busters campaign.
Remember you are leading, not following.
17. Use unfair labour practices to mobilize your support
The deck is stacked against workers standing up against their boss breaking the law. Don’t only rely on legal remedies to counter breaches of the law. Instead use jujitsu tactics and use the union busters missteps to mobilize support.
18. Preplan your counter to predictable union busting tactics
What are you going to do if there is a wage increase? A key supporter gets fired? Union busters are predictable, there is no excuse not to know your plan in advance.
19. Every vote should have at least three organizers
One inside organizer at the vote, one organizer in the office to make calls, and one organizer on standby to drive voters.
20. Look for small commitments from supporters
Commitments lead to ownership. Ownership leads to votes.
21. Get strong supporters to bring a friend to the vote
22. Vote on accepting bargaining proposals two days before the union election
Picture releasing a leaflet that says “90% of Comcast employees vote YES to accept bargaining proposals” coming out a day before the election.
23. Make a campaign calendar that maps out your strategy to lead
The will to win is nothing without a plan to win.
24. Call your supporters the night before the vote to check for last minute questions
25. Better yet, have your inside committee call your supporters the night before the vote
